Yes, if the dog isn’t fully vaccinated for Parvo. That means a full series of at least 3 rounds of puppy shots (I suggest 4 for breeds like Rottes, MinPins, Dobes or any “black and tan” breed– they seem to be extra susceptible). That means current annual boosters for adult dogs.

The virus is very hardy. It can live in the environment for up to a year. It can be killed with a solution of 12 oz. of bleach to enough water to make 1 gallon of solution. That’s fine for hard surfaces, but the virus can also live in carpets and on upholstery.

Make sure that your puppy has ALL of his shots, and not just the first round. That means he should be at least 4 months old.

You really need to contact a vet and talk about this. There is alot of conflicting information, about how long the parvo virus will stay present, and the best way to get rid of it.For example, bleach water is great to kill the virus, but not all surfaces can be bleached.depending on circumstances the answers could vary greatly.Your vet will be able to tell you what needs to be done to assure the health of your new pup.
With the safety of another pup in question, please contact your vet, insted of taking advice from here.

you should bleach your yard…If you have had parvo in your home, use the bleach and water solution to kill it. Parvo can live up to seven months, or longer, in your home or yard. Before bringing home another dog, be certain it has a strong immunity built up to parvo. Have your veterinarian draw blood and run a titre to confirm how well your prospective dog will fair in a parvo-infected environment. i knew this answer but i looked it up on line to see if there was anything new…

Parvo can live a long time in the environment.
And it is deadly and horrible to treat.
I would wait a while, bleach absolutely everyhting,
then get an older puppy with proof of a complete set of Parvo vaccines.
I expect a good breeder will understand you waiting to pick up you chosen pup until the boosters have all been administered.

YES!! parvo is highly contagious, unless the dog has been vaccinated for it recently (1 year)

Yes. Parvo is a very hardy disease & can live in the environment for several months. I would wait awhile to get another dog. But when you do make sure it is up-to-date on its shots. And don’t get one too young. Puppies receive anitbodies from their mother in the womb & from the 1st milk (colostrum). When a puppy gets their first set of shots @ 6 wks the antibodies from the mother can interfere w/ vaccine’s effectiveness. The same can happen at 9 wks. By 12 wks of age most puppies can be protected by the vaccine. However, its safer to wait until at least 16 wks or older to bring your puppy home.
