Parvo can last for 1-2 years. it is highly recommended that you do not bring a puppy (under 18 months) or elderly animal into the home during this time period. It is almost impossible to kill. I would keep the puppy away from the yard at all cost until he is over 18 months and has all his shots.
“Now for the yard, this is probably the most important part if this is where your dog went potty. If you know the exact locations the animal urinated and passed stool then first pick up any remains, then pour straight bleach on these areas. Yes it will kill some grass, but that is better than killing your next dog. After doing that, mix 10% bleach to 90% water in a large bucket and pour over then entire potty area of the yard. This is critical! The virus can live in the yard for years if not treated properly.”
I need to ask why on earth you would bring a puppy into a property where there has been a recent Parvo outbreak?
Was your outside dog who died of the disease not vaccinated?.
Have this puppy vaccinated on schedule and maybe he won’t get Parvo if you keep him away from the affected areas for the next few months.
The Parvovirus will be active for at least a year and possibly long after then. Bleaching the area where affected dogs have been is the only thing that kills Parvo.
I am so sorry that your vet didn’t explain to you how deadly and long lasting Parvo is in the ground and areas where the sick dog went. He would have advised you to not bring a puppy on to your contaminated property for at least 2 years.
He would have advised you that if you wanted another dog in the mean time that you should adopt an adult dog that was fully vaccinated and had a mature immune system.
As it is, your puppy is in danger from the contamination in your yard where ever your old “outside dog” defecated and urinated, and tracked it around. A few months later, and it would be nearly impossible to disinfect your yard good enough to remove all traces of the Parvo virus.
Keep your puppy away from this yard at all costs, make sure he is vaccinated the entire series of shots he needs as a puppy (including Parvo – of course!) and cross your fingers that he doesn’t get loose and wander into the affected area of both your yard and those on your neighbors property – you’ll need to keep this puppy on a leash, unless these areas are fenced off to him. Parvo is so deadly, that your puppy is at risk with being so close to known contaminated areas.
