Question by moviefreak321654: My dog contracted parvo from Petco grooming?
I recently took my 5 year old golden to Petco grooming, and she now has parvo. She is never around any other dogs except my other two which are perfectly healthy, is there anything that Petco could do for me? Is petco considered responsible?
Petco requires you to show that your pets have had the proper shots….My dog is up to date

u don’t have proof that she got parvo from being at Petco so i don’t think they would take responsibility.

so why was your dog not given a shot for this……… some of the places here will not even let your dog in unless it has had these shots.
I am sorry your dog is sick BUT if you chose to not get your dog the right shots then you can not blame others when they do get sick.
Why isn’t your dog vaccinated against parvo?
Edit: Something’s fishy here. Are you diagnosing parvo yourself or did the vet run the tests? Like other posters had said, you could have very easily brought parvo home on your shoes or it could have been in the yard. The chances of a dog catching parvo if already vaccinated is very slim.
Unfortunately, you cannot prove where your pet contracted parvo unless tests can be run immediately at the grooming center. Also, I have heard of this happening before. Petco and other pet stores in the USA seem to be notorious for this type of uncleanliness compared to our pet stores in the UK
You should get a booster every 1-2 years for your dogs for parvo. They can get it more than once in a lifetime, and it is a deadly and dangerous disease.
You will only usually get 12-18 months immunity to parvo with the jabs.
I would contact an attorney, perhaps one that has some specialization in animal cases.HOWEVER, get the dog looked at by a vet asap too and see if they can determine anything.. You can pick parvo up on the streets….on a walk. it can be anywhere and if your dog is not vaccinated it will be at risk… and petco may have had you sign a waiver….
It wont help though if you didnt have a parvo vaccine for your dog.. that is your responsibility as a pet owner.
No Petco is not responsible …You are. a 5 year old dog should have its Parvo shot. Its your responsibility to make sure your dogs are up to date on shots…If your other two do not have heir parvo shots take them to the vet as well, it is highly contagious and can be fatal.
Petco is not responsible you are for failing to vaccinate your dog. It is also possible it was not where she contracted it. Parvo doesn’t have to be contracted directly from another dog. She could have picked it up anywhere another dog had been or you could have even brought it home on your shoes walking where another dog had been.
It is also uncommon for a healthy adult dog to get parvo in the first place so I would recommend having your vet check her for underlying problems
Most groomers require proof that dogs are current on their vaccines before they can be groomed there, I know petsmart does. didn’t Petco? If they don’t then it might be decided that you accepted a certain amount of risk by taking your pet there. What does it say on the paper you signed for grooming or on the receipt. Does it mention vaccines or liability?
If you’re pet was not current on it’s vaccines, it unlikely that you can sue Petco since it could also be determined that you didn’t do what you are required to do by providing vaccines for your pet and you were at fault for taking your pet to an area where your unvaccinated animal could come in contact with other unvaccinated pets.
You are responsible for having your dogs vaccinated so that sort of thing does not happen. It is hard to believe you would take the time and money to have your dogs groomed yet not give them annual shots.
If your other two have not had their shots either you might want to be prepared for them to get it as well. All that money you are going to spend on treating for parvo could have been prevented and less expensive with vaccinations. I do not feel sorry for you at all, however I do feel sorry for the dogs that fell into the hands of an irresponsible owner.
You need to look at your waiver for grooming. If you didn’t sign anything check your receipt. I don’t think petco will be held liable but I would try to pursue them for the cost of treatment. However they only require a rabies vaccination there and as a pet owner you should be weary about a place that doesn’t require full vaccination before treating your pet. Petco could argue with you that you walked your dog and stepped in another pets feces. They are not going to be willing to help you out but it is most definitely worth a shot. I hope your doggy gets better. You need to take them all in for a check up and they may all need to be treated so that it doesn’t spread. You more than likely will need to quarantine your dog from the other ones until the disease is gone. It is imperative that you vaccinate to guard against these things from happening.
Vaccinations are not considered 100% fool proof.
It is no ones fault, sorry.
petco and petsmart have a huge problem with dogs getting parvo and kennel cough.yes your dog probably got it there. you have to go to the vet. if your healthy you should be fine. if anyone in your family has cancer or are week from anything else you have to keep the dog away from them.good luck.
