Parvo surviving dog is now a very picky eater. Could that be a lasting effect?

Question by Bufo Alvarius: Parvo surviving dog is now a very picky eater. Could that be a lasting effect?
She used to eat any type of dog food b4 the parvo, dry/ moist, whatever. Now she only eats the expensive brand of canned foods.
Has anyone noticed this in any other parvo survivors?

Thank you for your help.

Your dog’s immune system went through severe trauma. You should be feeding a high quality, holistic food for the dog’s life. Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Innova and Merrick are all good brands. Wet food or mixing wet and dry food is fine as long as you brush your dog’s teeth once or twice a week.

Yes, my sister dog use to eat dog food until she get tire, before she died she was eaten nothing but chicken and meat ball. She refuse to eat dog food. Most dogs do that. Try to mixed both together. If she doesn’t wants to eat, put away for a while, then put back again. As soon as she get hungry she will eat it.

well if it was my dog i would suspect she was just pretending not to eat the cheap stuff because she likes the good food better. she’s always doing things like that though.

i can’t say i’ve heard of this in any other parvo survivor, if you’re having trouble paying for the food and would prefer she went back onto the cheap stuff maybe give your vet a call and see what they think and what you should do.
when she’s strong and healthy i would suggest giving her the cheaper stuff because she’ll eat it when she’s hungry whether she likes it or not, but if she’s not back to full health i wouldn’t do that. just check with your vet whether this is normal to be on the safe side.
good luck, you obviously have a tough dog!

How old is this dog and how long ago did this dog have parvo? If this dog had parvo in the past 3 weeks, it should still be on a rice, chicken breast, yogurt and cottage cheese diet phasing in a premium food… If it’s been longer maybe your dog realized what you were feeding him before was **** and he’s telling you that he no longer wants to eat card board.
